WordPress 7.0 “Armstrong”: All You Need to Know!

The Big News: AI Integrated into the Core

WordPress 7.0 includes the first foundations for direct AI integration into the platform. This means that, for the first time, you can connect your preferred AI provider—Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI—and put it to work within your website.

  • A centralized screen for managing connections: The new Connectors screen (under Settings > Connectors) is the control point for managing all integrations with external services, including AI providers. You can activate them, configure API keys, and manage everything from a single place.
  • AI capabilities available in the editor: Once the provider is connected, you have access to AI tools directly in the editor: generate titles and excerpts, edit images, suggest alternative texts. The system is open: third-party plugins can also leverage this infrastructure to expand capabilities.

Visual Revisions: Now You Can Compare Versions Graphically

One of the most useful changes for content editors. Until now, revisions showed differences in text format (or HTML code, depending on the editor we use). Now you can compare two versions of the same page with a visual slider, block by block. You see exactly where the content has changed, how, and you can restore any version with a single click. Especially useful in projects with multiple people editing the same content.

Mobile Navigation Design

Now you can fully design the menu displayed on mobile devices directly from the site editor. Don’t limit yourself to a list of links: you can add columns, images, large fonts, custom alignment. You can start from a template or design it from scratch. For clients with websites that have a lot of content or complex navigation, this is a significant change.

Undoubtedly one of the most interesting tools, as WordPress has always been very limiting in controlling its responsive menus. Often, two versions of the same menu were needed, one for desktop and one for mobile, including extra elements. This could end with version 7.0. However, it will be necessary to check if our theme allows the use of these functionalities.

Visibility Control by Device

Now you can show or hide specific blocks by device—desktop, tablet, mobile—without affecting others. Controls are available in the block toolbar, inspector, and command palette. Visual indicators appear in the list view showing you which blocks have active visibility rules.

Again, a functionality that only applies to Gutenberg and that other builders have already incorporated many versions ago.

Improvements in the Administration Dashboard

WordPress 7.0 introduces a new color scheme called “Modern”: a refreshed palette, higher contrast, and improved typography. Navigation between screens now includes smooth visual transitions. Font management gets its own page within the dashboard, centralizing the installation and management of fonts for block, hybrid, and classic themes.

New Blocks and Design Improvements in Gutenberg

Version 7.0 incorporates new blocks and expands the capabilities of existing ones in the Gutenberg editor. These new features do not affect you if you work with other editors like Elementor, Divi, or similar.

  • Heading Block: variations for all heading levels, with quick transformations.
  • Breadcrumbs Block: automatically reflects the site’s navigation hierarchy. Includes filters to customize paths.
  • Gallery Block: now with lightbox support and slideshow option.
  • Cover Block: allows inserting videos as section backgrounds.
  • Custom CSS per block: granular style control directly on each block.
  • Height and width support for blocks, and new predefined dimension values.
  • Visibility control by device: now you can show or hide specific blocks by device—desktop, tablet, mobile—without affecting others.
  • Patterns as blocks: you can create patterns (complex module structures) and drag, clone them, etc., without needing to go module by module.

Accessibility and Security

WordPress 7.0 includes accessibility improvements across the core: better compatibility with voice navigation, corrections in the color contrast of the new admin scheme, and adjustments to password reset to comply with WCAG 2.2 standards.

Regarding security, Administrator and Editor roles have been removed from the default role selector for new user registrations. A small but important change to reduce configuration errors on websites with open registration.

Our Assessment

WordPress 7.0 is a strategic transitional release. The AI foundations being incorporated now do not replace any existing workflows but position the platform for a future where AI assistants will be part of everyday editing. For the websites we maintain, we will review plugin and theme compatibilities before performing any updates. If you have a web project with us and have questions about the impact of the new version, we are available to advise you.

If you want your WordPress to always be updated and running smoothly, our web programming service takes care of keeping it up to date.
